Adlai E. Stevenson (1900-1965) was the Governor of Illinois, the two-time Democratic nominee for president, as well as the U. S. Ambassador to the United Nations under President John F. Kennedy. He met Arthur Schlesinger (1917-2007) when Schlesinger became the primary speech writer for his (Stevenson's) presidential campaigns. When Kennedy was elected, both men went to work for him, Stevenson as mentioned above, and Schlesinger as a Special Assistant to the President, working as a speech writer and unofficial "troubleshooter." Stevenson and Schlesinger were close friends, and both were witnesses to one of the most eventful periods in American history.
