[WWII Submarine Operations] Autograph Letter Written by an Officer of the Submarine USS Grayback (SS 208) Weeks Before it Was Sunk by the Japanese. The lot includes a copy of the book United States Submarine Losses World War II. Washington: Navy History Division, 1963. Illustrated. Publisher's cloth. Very good. The book gives the operational history and roster of crews for submarine losses during WWII, including that of the Grayback. Written by Ensign Vincent M. Rauber, the two page autograph letter, 7.25" x 9.5" on United States Submarine letterhead, [San Francisco], January 1, 1944, to Lt. Comdr. D. B. Candler, a former professor at the University of Texas, Austin was written just about a month before the Grayback was sunk by a Japanese carrier-based aircraft in the East China Sea. In reads, in part: "Finally was assigned to a submarine. Really had a streak of luck since I was assigned the day I reported. Most fellows have to serve on a relief crew for a while and I really feel lucky. Have a fine skipper [Commander John A. Moore]...". The Grayback was sunk on or about February 27, 1944 on her tenth patrol.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
