[xii], 104, 40, 64, 83, [1, blank], 16, [17-20, contents and errata] pages. Engraved frontispiece, 14 engraved plates and one folding table. Later sprinkled calf boards, rebacked to style, with five raised bands and gilt-lettered red morocco label; page edges sprinkled brown and red; recent endpapers. Boards lightly rubbed. Hinge strengthened at frontispiece; rear hinge cracked; neat marginal notation to page [1]. A bright, very good copy

    Divided into four parts as follows: I. The History of the First Settlement of Virginia, and the Government thereof, to the present time. II. The Natural Productions and Conveniences of the Country, suited to Trade and improvement. III. The Native Indians, their Religion, Laws, and Customs, in War and Peace. IV. The present State of the Country, as to the Polity of the Government, and the Improvement of the Land. "After John Smith, the first account of this colony, the first one penned by a native and the best contemporary record of its aboriginal tribes and of the life of its early settlers" (Howes). According to Church, it was "published anonymously" and that "the author had had experience in the public records of the colony, and the books treating the institutional life of the colony and the Indians re both full and satisfactory."
