    The First Magazine Appearance
    of the United States Constitution

[United States Constitution]. [Mathew Carey, editor]. The American Museum. Or Repository of Ancient and Modern Fugitive Pieces... Philadelphia: Mathew Carey, July-December, 1787. Volume II, Numbers I-VI, including the first magazine appearance of the Constitution of the United States, as well the first appearance of the first six Federalist Papers outside of New York. A subscriber's copy, belonging to James Ross with his ownership signatures and gift inscription of the July title-page. Octavo. 600, 22 pages. Contemporary brown calf. Calf from boards almost entirely perished, boards quite worn, front corners chipped, some wear to spine, hinges starting, some wear in text, some intermittent foxing and marginal dampstaining, some marginal short tears, one leaf (page 487-488) with loss to upper third of page. Bookplate (partially missing) to front pastedown. Still, a very good copy. Chemised in quarter brown morocco clamshell case.

Carey's American Museum was the most comprehensive American magazine of the eighteenth century, printing political tracts, foreign correspondence and news, poetry and prose. George Washington said of it: "That a more useful literary plan has never been undertaken in America, or one deserving of public encouragement." Although The Columbian Magazine (the only other important American magazine of the period) also printed the constitution, The American Museum published theirs two days before. The American Museum had many important contributors, including Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, John Jay, and Noah Webster, to name but a few. Sabin 1162. Evans 20194.
