    Description

[Thomas] J. Dimsdale. The Vigilantes of Montana, or Popular Justice in the Rocky Mountains. Being a Correct and Impartial Narrative of the Chase, Trial, Capture and Execution of Henry Plummer's Road Agent Band, Together with Accounts of the Lives and Crimes of Many of the Robbers and Desperadoes, the Whole Being Interspersed with Sketches of Life in the Mining Camps of the "Far West;" Forming the only reliable work on the subject ever offered the public. Virginia City, M. T.: Montana Post Press, D. W. Tilton & Co., Book and Job Printers, 1866. First edition. Small octavo (6.5 x 4.75 inches; 166 x 121 mm.). 228, [4, ads] pages. Publisher's perfect binding, original light green printed paper wrappers; all text block edges trimmed. Wrappers showing a minor amount of wear; light creasing along backstrip and near joints with a bit of further, softer creasing near edges; small spot of brown soiling near fore-edge of front wrapper, with a small penciled price at upper left corner; tiny gouge mark toward upper right corner of rear wrapper; trace of pale soiling to insides of wrappers. Text block edges softly dulled and a bit soiled; persistent, marginal soiling throughout interior, including thumbsoiling, spot-staining, and smudging; occasional evidence of dog-earing scattered throughout; repaired tear extending about an inch and a half in from fore-edge of leaves with pp. 61-62 and 211-212; handful of faint, marginal pencil annotations. Very good, especially given the fragile nature of the item. "Not only the first, but textually the most important, book ever printed in Montana" - Howes D345. "Exceedingly rare.... The original edition is said to be the first book produced by a printing press in Montana. Perhaps no book excells Dimsdale's in presenting the picture of the lawless conditions that characterized the mining camps of the Rocky Mountain country" - Adams, Six-Guns and Saddle Leather 596.
