Containing Selections from Foreign Reviews and Magazines of Such Articles as Are Most Valuable, Curious, or Entertaining. Volume IV. Philadelphia: Published and sold by Moses Thomas, 1814. First edition, collected issues. Octavo (8.25 x 5 inches; 210 x 126 mm.). iv, 524 pages. Vignette title-page and four additional plates, all portraits. Contemporary half calf over marbled paper-covered boards, spine lettered and ruled in gilt; all text block edges trimmed, possibly originally stained yellow. Cracking along spine and at joints; spine darkened; slight wear at spine ends; boards rubbed; edge wear; corners bumped, with boards peeking through leather. Top edge of text block darkened; fore-edge tanned; endpapers discolored and spotted with age; previous owner inking at front free endpaper. Pages lightly tanned; foxing scattered throughout interior. Good. The first appearance in book or magazine from of Francis Scott Key's "Defence of Fort M'Henry," which would go on to serve as the lyrics for "The Star-Spangled Banner," is on page 433.
