Third edition, referred to as the "Gun-Wad" Bible. Thick small quarto. [viii], 992, 277,  pages. Lacks last blank (?).
Contemporary calf rebacked with original spine laid down. Clasps not present. Binding worn. Hinges crudely reinforced with brown tape. Some dampstaining and foxing throughout. Margins of some leaves a bit tattered. Contemporary notations on front blanks. A very good copy of a rare work, most copies of which were destroyed by the British after occupying Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1777.
"Of this edition three thousand copies were printed, but the greater part was used for cartridge paper at the battle of Germantown. Sowe [Saur] doubting the capacity of the Colonists to secure their independence, removed to Philadelphia when in possession by the British; his estate was confiscated by the Colonists and his books were sold" (Sabin, p. 135).
The Estelle Doheny copy, with her morocco bookplate on the front pastedown, sold as part of lot 191 at Christie's in 2001.
