Henry, and sold by F. Newbery, [1776]. First edition, collected issues. Octavo in fours (8.125 x 4.875 inches; 207 x 127 mm.). [4], 608, [16, indexes] pages. Title vignette ornament, in-text engravings, initials, decorative rules, five plates (one folding) and nine inserted folding maps, including of the Philadelphia region, Rhode Island and Connecticut, and two of Manhattan and Long Island. Plates out of order but all present. Contemporary half-calf with marbled paper-covered boards; spine stamped in gilt with five raised bands and red morocco spine label. All edges speckled red. Fairly heavy chipping to spine ends; vertical cracking at backstrip, hinges; some flaking of surface of calf, gilt; darkening and spot of dark staining to panel beneath label; bands intact and spine firm. Rubbing, fading, and edge wear to boards; bumping at corners. Faint scattered foxing at extreme fore-edge margin through some parts of text block, across some plates; mild wear at creases of folding maps; minor occasional toning, offsetting. Good binding with a near fine, clean text block. Believed to be the first British printing of the Declaration of Independence which appears on pages. 361-362. Sabin 26954.
