[The Carolinas]. The Humble Address of the Right Honourable the Lords Spiritual and Temporal In Parliament Assembled presented to Her Majesty on Wednesday, March 13, 1705, Relating to the Province of Carolina, And the Petition therein Mentioned. With Her Majesty's most Gracious Answer Thereunto. London: Printed by Charles Bill, and the Executrix of Thomas Newcomb..., 1705. First edition of this exceedingly rare pamphlet. Two folio leaves on one large folded folio sheet. Page sizes approximately 13 x 8 inches; 327 x 202 mm. 4 pages. Fold in center between pages nearly entirely torn, edges of pages neatly trimmed (a bit close in places), each page with one horizontal and one vertical crease. A clean, bright, near fine example of this exceedingly rare pamphlet (only one other copy has been found at auction on Rare Book Hub in the last hundred years). Sabin 10972; referenced in Sabin 87359, 87805.

This historical petition claims that Carolina settlers were deprived of their rights at the detriment of the province, and that this would lead to ruin for the entire settlement. This ruin would lead to "the great Disadvantage of the Trade of the Kingdom, to the apparent Prejudice of Her Majesty's Customs, and the great benefit of the French, who watch all Opportunities to Improve their own Settlements in those Parts of America." It is endorsed in print by several early Carolina settlers, including Joseph Paice, Joseph Boone, Thomas Gould, John Hodgkins, and many more.
