Description[Texas Independence]. Bound May 2-August 31, 1836 Issues of The Times (London) With Reports of the Battles for Texas Independence. Comprising issued 16,092 through 16,196 inclusive. Containing approximately 8 accounts of battles of the Texian forces. Large folio. Contemporary marbled board with leather spine. From the library of Maj. Gen. Sir Henry Wheatley (1777-1852) whose ex-libris is mounted on the front pastedown.
An interesting look a defining year of the Texas independence movement through the eyes of English journalists. A few examples suffice: the Monday, June 29th edition includes a report of Santa Anna's capture by Sam Houston; the Wednesday, July 27th edition reports an armistice between Mexico and the Texian armies; the Tuesday, August 23rd edition reports a "coolness growing up in the middle and eastern states" to the Texian struggle and the Monday, August 29th edition reports "All accounts from Texas tend to prove that the revolutionists are in a state of distraction. There are several contending parties; power and emolument are the moving, perhaps the only, principle which is there operating. The Chieftains are generally profligate and reckless; patriotism is neither known or felt among them."
Condition: Externally poor, internally about very good. The boards are well-worn with areas of loss to the leather spine and corners. The textblock is broken in several places making the binding loose. The contents are toned and brittle around the edges as one would expect with paper of this quality.
