[T. J. V. Braght]. Der Blutige Schau-Platz oder Mârtyrer-Spiegel der Tauffs-Gesinnten oder Wehrlosen-Christen... Ephrata in Pensylvanien: Drucks und Verlags der Bruederschafft, 1748. With the rare engraved frontispiece. Two volumes in one. Folio. 56, 478, [4, Register]; [2], [2], [10], 949, [1], [8, Das Neu Register], [2] pages. Contemporary black leather over wooden boards, corner pieces with bosses, partial clasps; binding heavily rubbed, spine rebacked, catch of clasps to front board but clasps themselves lacking. Frontispiece reinforced (supplied?), somewhat toned and foxed with a few chips in margin, not affecting image, some spotting and dampstaining but still very good. Text block moderately toned and foxed, edges of text block heavily soiled, some chipping but only minor losses, primarily to early leaves, dampstaining to top margin throughout, but not affecting text. Still, a good example of this text with the rare frontispiece.

"The largest book printed at the Brotherhood Press. The Ephrata Brethren were three years engaged upon its printing and binding. The paper was manufactured at Ephrata, and the laborious task of translating this great work from Dutch into German was also accomplished by them. The edition consisted of twelve hundred copies... The engraved frontispiece, representing the army of martyrs marching to Heaven... is generally missing, as the design was offensive to the Mennonites" (Evans). The engraved frontispiece is present in this copy. Evans 6256.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
