[Slavery]. Claude Serres. Les Institutions du Droit Francais. Paris: [Chez la Veuve Cavelier, 1754]. Second edition. French text. Contemporary leather binding with five raised spine bands and gilt titles. Boards worn at the edges; small sections of leather binding lacking on the front and rear board; lower half of title page lacking; contemporary marginalia on the endpapers; contents bright. Very good internal condition in a good contemporary binding. Contains a treatise on black people slavery, a precise and precious witness on slaves condition before the first abolition. The part containing the treaty on slavery is rather edifying and witnesses upon the condition of the Africans in America, and provides better understanding of the wheels of the system set up until the first abolition. Thus, in the extract below one reads that slavery does not exist in France since the Catholic religion forbade it. On the other hand, it is a systematic practice in the colonies. The details of the condition of the slaves are increasingly sordid with the thread of the pages. Page 17, one can learn that "Because of the purity of manners, if a Master after having some child of its slave, refuse to marry the mother, the slave and the child will be confiscated for the great benefit to the Hospital, and will never be enfranchised.
