Burgoyne's Version of the Failure of his
Canadian Campaign, the Turning Point of
    the American Revolutionary War

[Revolutionary War]. [John Burgoyne]. A State of the Expedition from Canada, as Laid Before the House of Commons... London: Printed for J. Almon, 1780. The Second Edition. Octavo. [xi], 191, [1, blank], cix, [3, blank] pages. With fold-out table, and five (of six) folding maps inserted at rear. Maps with some hand-coloring. Contemporary full calf, spine ruled in gilt, burgundy gilt morocco lettering label. Binding worn, endleaves with some offsetting, text and endleaves foxed and toned, maps damaged (most quite heavily), with two maps having missing portions neatly trimmed and affixed. Contemporary ownership signature on front pastedown and title-page. Still, a good copy.
This book is Burgoyne's explanation of the disastrous defeat of his Canadian campaign at Saratoga. It was due to this stunning victory for the colonists (in which nearly 6,000 British and Hessian troops surrendered) that Louis XVI of France entered into negotiations with the colonists. This eventually resulted in formal aid to the colonists - thus tipping the revolutionary war in their favor.
