Description[New Orleans]. Edwards Pierrepont. A Review by Judge Pierrepont of Gen. Butler's Defense, Before the House of Representatives, in Relation to the New Orleans Gold. New York: Wm. C. Bryant & Co., 1865. Twelvemo. Original printed self-wrappers. Some very minor toning and chipping. Very good.
A letter to House Speaker Schuyler Colfax, this item analyzes Butler's "audacious sham" of a defense. Pierrepont was a Union Democrat and reformer, and a prominent lawyer who later helped to prosecute John Surratt for his role in the Lincoln assassination. Here he represents a New Orleans firm, Samuel Smith & Co., from which Butler allegedly seized $50,000 in gold during his Civil War tenure there, purportedly in order to pay his troops-- but the Paymaster's Office has no record of the transaction, or of Butler's promise to reimburse Smith. Pierrepont includes his correspondence with Butler regarding the matter. Sabin 62784.
