Description

The Exceedingly Rare First Edition of a Cornerstone of Mormon Theology - the 1835 Edition of "Doctrine and Covenants of the Church of Latter Day Saints"

[Mormons]. [Joseph Smith, Junior, Oliver Cowdery, Sidney Rigdon, Frederick G. Williams, compilers]. Doctrine and Covenants of the Church of Latter Day Saints: Carefully Selected from the Revelations of God... Kirtland, Ohio: Printed by F. G. Williams & Co. for the Proprietors, 1835. First edition of this very rare book, containing the first obtainable appearance in print of some of the most important revelations for Latter Day Saints (with the "Doctrine" portion of the book, which was later removed from subsequent editions). Small octavo. Approximately 6 x 3.75 inches. 257, [1, blank], xxv, [1, blank] pages. Three blank leaves at end. Complete with indices and Note to the Reader. Near contemporary full calf, spine ruled in gilt, brown gilt morocco lettering label. Binding restored and rebacked, preserving most of the original spine, hinges reinforced, some light soiling to endleaves, some wrinkling and minor occasional soiling in text (yet text, overall, is still quite bright). Overall, a fine and complete copy of this rare holy book.

On the first rear blank is the contemporary inscription: "Rhoda Knights / Book Given / to her by her / Father." Her father was Hezekiah Fisk, an early member of the Mormon faith, who had moved his family to Navoo, IL around 1838-1839 (where he and most of his family later died of fever - including Rhodah [the correct spelling of her name]). It comes to this auction through her family.

In 1833, three years after the Mormon Church was created, it was decided that the Mormons would print an important collection of Joseph Smith's revelations, entitled, The Book of Commandments (only heretofore available in manuscript). The press in Zion (Independence, MO) was to print 10,000 copies, but in July of 1833, an angry anti-Mormon mob destroyed the press and most of the copies (only a handful of copies, none complete, are extant today). After emigrating to Kirtland, OH, the elders decreed that a new and expanded version of these revelations were to be printed. Sabin states: "the first part consists of lectures on faith...with questions and answers, pp. 5--74; the second part, "Covenants and Commandments," contains the revelations included in the earlier "Book of Commandments," differently arranged, and considerably revised, with some additional revelations for that period as well as for the years 1832 to 1834, followed by two articles, one on "Marriage," and the other, "Of Governments and Laws in General," the whole making 102 numbered sections, pp. 75--254. The minutes of the General Assembly of August, 1835, relating to the publication...and the adoption of the articles, fill pp. 255--257; the two indexes, one chronological...the other alphabetical, pp. i--xxiii; and notes to the reader on the errata to be corrected, p. XXV." Sabin 83152. Flake 2869. Howes S624.
