The daily Spectator (published in 1711-12 and for a short period in 1714) was an influential publication founded by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele. The goal of the publication was "to enliven morality with wit, and to temper wit with morality... to bring philosophy out of the closets and libraries, schools and colleges, to dwell in clubs and assemblies, at tea-tables and coffeehouses." The complete run of the Spectator is contained in these eight volumes.
