Description

[John Wesley Hardin]. The Life of John Wesley Hardin, from the Original Manuscript, as written by himself. Seguin: Smith & Moore, 1896. First edition, first issue. Octavo. 144 pages. Portraits. Illustrations. Publisher's original printed wrappers. Mild toning on the covers, mostly near the spine and edges of wrappers. Small wormhole from front to rear and a bit of modest damage at the lower edge of the textblock. Contents toned, as usual, else a splendid copy in fine condition. Housed in a beautiful recent half calf and marbled boards clamshell case. An autobiography of one of the most notorious gunfighters the West has ever known. Due to objections from Hardin's family, the book was withdrawn from circulation and stored in a warehouse in San Antonio, and only 400 copies are thought to have survived a warehouse fire. "The edition has now become rare." (Basic Texas Books). Basic Texas Books 84. Graff 1780. Howes H188. Six-Guns 919.
