Description[John Adams, subject]. John Wood. The History of the Administration of John Adams, esq... New-York: [Barlas & Ward], 1802. First edition, the rare first issue.
Octavo. [2, blank], [ii], 506 pages. Bound to style in modern full brown calf, paneled in black, spine ruled and numbered in gilt, gilt burgundy morocco lettering label. New endpapers. Contemporary ownership signature and neat ink notes on title-page, some toning and occasional soiling in text. Page-edges rough. Still a very good copy of this rare item.
The author of this book wrote this anti-Federalist and pro-Burr book in an effort to advance those causes, but Burr felt that this book, which was so slanderous and filled with falsehoods and misrepresentations, would eventually cause a backlash, and so he (Burr) repudiated it. Burr destroyed every copy he could get his hands on, but some copies survived. Surviving copies have the publisher's imprint excised, as this one is.
