Hawley & Co., 1865. First Edition, first state with "Indian Red" at the end of line 3 on page 151. Octavo. [iv], v-xi, 19-394, [errata, 5 blank]. Portrait frontispiece and inserted plates throughout. Publisher's brown cloth tooled in blind with publisher's monogram to boards. Titles in gilt at spine. Edgeworn, with bumped corners and minor fraying to spine ends. Joints cracked. Significant notations in pencil at front free endpaper. Very good.

    A vivid accounting of Pike's exploits as a Texas Ranger. "Pike tells a bully story to be ranked along with the personal narratives of trhose other two vivid ranger chroniclers, James B.
