[James Madison]. Sir William Blackstone, Knt. Commentaries on the Laws of England. In Four Books. Re-Printed from the British Copy, Page for Page with the Last Edition. Philadelphia: Printed for the Subscribers, by Robert Bell, 1771. First U. S. edition. Copy belonging to Founding Father and fourth president of the United States, James Madison, with his signature, "James Madison Junr" at head of title-page. First volume only. Octavo (8.875 x 5.625 inches; 226 x 142 mm.). [8], ii, [6], 485, [1, blank] pages. Contemporary calf; all text block edges trimmed. Calf worn, with portions missing at spine and front board (tiny area at spine appears to be insect damage, the remainder wear); heavily rubbed, with evidence of some staining; front hinge expertly repaired, board possibly reattached. Front pastedown and both rear endpapers added later, all with some minor age discoloration; lower corner and bottom edge of rear free endpaper torn away. Uneven but expected dulling to text block, particularly along edges; a bit of minor staining to edges; damp staining to margins of last several gatherings; occasional spot-staining and subtle evidence of dog-earing scattered throughout interior; † gathering coming loose but still sound. Very good text block in a good binding of Madison's personal copy of this foundational work of English law. Housed in custom light green cloth clamshell. Evans 11996; Grolier English 100, 52; PMM 212 ("Blackstone's great achievement was to popularize the law and the traditions which had influenced its formation.")
