Folding map of "Utah, and the Overland Routes to it from the Missouri River" (11.25" x 19.5") by F. D. Richards. This version with Utah borders hand-colored, but not the counties. Handsomely bound in a recent half leather over marbled boards. Titles stamped in gilt on a red morocco spine label. All edges stained red. Modest shelf wear to binding; a few plates with damp stains at the edges not affecting the image; internally clean; a better than encountered copy in near fine condition.

    More Information:

"One of the most elaborately and beautifully illustrated of western books. A large portion of the edition was water-damaged while in transit to New York. In some copies of the map Utah counties are hand-colored" (Howes). "This elaborately prepared and illustrated book was published as a monument to the Mormon emigration to Utah, and as a means of attracting further emigrants. Piercy made a special trip to America [in 1853] to make sketches for the plates, which are some of the best western views of the period" (Streeter).

"One of the basic sources of illustrated western Americana of the period" (Taft, Artists and Illustrators of the Old West, 1850-1900, page 285). The engravings include views of New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Natchez, Vicksburg, Memphis, St. Louis, Nauvoo, the Missouri River and Council Bluffs, Scott's Bluffs, Fort Laramie and Laramie's Peak, the Great Salt Lake, and Great Salt Lake City; and portraits of the Sons of the Prophet Joseph: Joseph Smith, Jun., and David Smith, their mother Lucy Smith, Joseph and Hyrum Smith, Brigham Young, and Father John Smith, and John Smith, son of Hyrum.
