the Library of Noted Virginia Lawyer
    John H. Peyton (1778-1847)

[George Washington]. The Washingtoniana: Containing a Biographical Sketch of the Late Gen. George Washington With Various Outlines of His Character, From the Pens of Different Eminent Writers, both in Europe and America; and an Account of the Various Funeral Honors Devoted to His Memory. To Which are Annexed His Will and Schedule of His Property. Baltimore: Printed and sold by Samuel Sower, 1800. First edition, second issue. Sixteenmo. [viii], [7]-258, 271-298, [7, list of subscribers] pages. Frontispiece portrait of Washington engraved by Benjamin Tanner (1775-1848) after a work by Edward Savage (1761-1817). Brown leather [old calf] spine and boards with gilt title and banding. Ex-libris of John H. Peyton (1778-1847) as well as his signature on title page and front pastedown. Minor shelf wear, some foxing at the preliminary and terminal pages and some minor toning to contents, otherwise a sound, complete copy of this rare work, in very good condition. Beside the value of this book, which is rare in complete state with the engraved portrait of George Washington, it is interesting as having belonged to this celebrated Virginia lawyer, who was the author of a series of resolutions upon the attitude of the State of Pennsylvania with reference to settling disputes between the state and federal judiciary, of which Daniel Webster said: "They are so conclusive of the question that they admit of no further discussion."
