[George Folsom]. Mexico in 1842: a Description of the Country, Its Natural and Political Features; With a Sketch of Its History, Brought Down to the Present Year. To Which is Added an Account of Texas and Yucatan; and of the Santa Fe Expedition. New York: Charles J. Folsom, 1842. First edition. 16mo. 256 pages. Folding hand-colored map titled "Mexico and Texas in 1842" tipped-in front. Modern three-quarter leather over marbled boards. Titles stamped in gilt on the spine.

This book is sought after as much for its text as for the rather unusual map, which shows the Republic of Texas in a rather strange configuration with an elongated Panhandle which reaches to the Arkansas River. Though the Panhandle is wide, the outlining carefully retreats back to just east of Santa Fe. The southwestern boundary follows the Rio Grande and Pecos Rivers, relinquishing most of the Trans-Pecos West to Mexico.

Condition: Very good. Text-blocked trimmed when rebound. Trivial scattered foxing. Grand Rapids Public Library stamp on the title page. Internally very clean.
