First edition of the first official manual of the army of the United States. The German-born Steuben, who served as inspector general of the Continental Army, was trained in the highly disciplined military system developed under Frederick the Great. Commissioned by the Continental Congress, Steuben's manual became the standard text for the United States Army into the early 19th century. Numerous editions were printed by 1800.

A good copy of this first edition of this military manual written for the use of American troops during the Revolutionary War.
