    [Featured Lot]. [Civil War General George Foster Shepley]. [Women's Rights Advocate John Neal]. SIGNED/ INSCRIBED. Autograph and Photo Album of Annie H. Shepley. [Portland, Maine, 1860-1861].
    Annie H. Shepley was the daughter of Civil War Union General George Foster Shepley.

    Numerous ink and pencil autographs with thirty-two small, approximately 1 x 1.25 inch, oval calotype portrait photos. [There are nine additional damaged or lost portraits]. The first signature is of Annie's father "G.F. Shepley" and dated "Christmas 1860". Among the autographs is an inscription by Maine based author, art critic, and women's rights advocate John Neal, as well as the signature and photo of his wife Eleanor Neal, which is coming loose, on the following page.

    Blank autograph note book with blind stamped designs and gilt "Autograph" device on front board, all edges gilt. Holograph name of Annie H. Shepley in ink and partially erased pencil on front free endpaper. Binding heavily rubbed and scuffed with surface loss, front board coming loose, rear board with several blank pages detached, lacking backstrip. Pages with some foxing, creases from photo adhesives, soiling and stains, edge wear and small corner bends. Fair. From the collection of Zita Books.
