Description

[Eric Pape]. Charles D. Coburn (American Stage and Film Actor, 1877-1961). Collection of Correspondence from Coburn to Artist Eric Pape.

    More Information:

Including: Two Typed Letters Signed. New York: November 26, 1920, December 1, 1920. One octavo page on one octavo leaf and one quarto page on one quarto leaf. On Coburn's blue personal stationery. Both letters concern Coburn's desire in speaking to Pape about the possibility of Pape designing sets for an upcoming production of Macbeth. Creases, some toning. Good. [And:] Autograph Note Signed. Sixteen Gramercy Park, May 14/24. One twelvemo page on one twelvemo leaf. On embossed stationery of The Players. Confirming an upcoming meeting with Pape in the lobby of the Empire Theater. Some creases, toning. Good. With original mailing envelope (evidently this note was hand-delivered, as there is no stamp or full addresss for Pape). [And:] Printed Christmas Card. [New York: 1924]. Three sixteenmo printed pages on one folded quarto leaf. In original mailing envelope. Very good.

Charles D. Coburn performed on Broadway until 1937 upon the death of his wife, actress Ivah Wills. He then relocated to Los Angeles and began a film career. He won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for The More the Merrier in 1943. He also appeared in The Lady Eve (1941), Kings Row (1942), Heaven Can Wait (1973), The Paradine Case (1947), and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953).
