All volumes are first editions, with exceptions for the following years: 1758 (fifth edition, 1768), 1759 (fourth edition, 1765), 1767 (eighth edition, 1809), 1773 (fifth edition, 1803), 1792-1793 (stated "New Edition," 1821), 1794-1795 (second edition, 1806-1807), 1808 (stated "New Edition," 1820), 1809 (stated "New Edition," 1821), 1812 (stated "New Edition," 1821), 1813 (published 1823), 1815 (stated "New Edition," 1824). Octavo. Uniformly bound in contemporary three-quarter polished brown calf, black morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers. New Series uniformly bound in publisher's purple cloth.

    Volume 1 with partial modern copper endpapers, all other volumes with complete modern copper endpapers. Volume 6 (1763) has four folding maps bound at rear. Volume 104 with errata slip tipped-in to contents page. Bookplate of bibliophile Edward W. Allen to all front free endpapers except Volume 1. Volume 8 with fold-out chart pp. 252-253. Volumes 30-34 with ink ownership to title page or verso; Volume 86 with "Derby Town & Country Library" stamp to title page. Several volumes with bookseller's tickets to front or rear pastedowns.

    Volumes 1-104 with overall corners bumped, moderate to heavy edgewear, rubbed. Internally generally clean; moderate to heavy intermittent foxing, some uneven toning of pages, minor edgewear, edges darkened. Volume 6 pp. 181-183 ripped in half; Volume 52 with large gouge on back board; Volume 62 with heavy damage to rear board. New Series with corners bumped and rubbed; moderate edgewear, spines heavily sunned, chipping to head and foot of spine panels; rubbed. Internally generally clean; pages partially unopened, some hinges starting, minor intermittent foxing, pages unevenly toned, edges darkened.
