[Declaration of Independence]. Sylvanus Urban, Gent. The Gentleman's Magazine, and Historical Chronicle, Volume XLVI For the Year M.DCCLXXVI. London: D. Henry, 1776. A bound volume of all twelve issues of Gentleman's Magazine for the year 1776. First edition. Octavo. iii, [4]-608 pages, with an additional index. Three plates, four folding maps, with in-text illustrations throughout, featuring an early British publication of the Declaration of Independence (page 361). It appears two additional folding maps have been removed; "A Map of the Country round Philadelphia" (on page 396) and "Map of the Progress of his Majesty's Armies in New York" (on page 606). These folding maps were highly sought after in England as they could provide valuable detailed information of the American landscape for English soldiers fighting abroad during the Revolution. Half leather over marbled boards, with gilt letter and detailing on spine and original spine label. On the front paste down is written in ink "Henry C. Johnson / June 1874".

The Gentleman's Magazine was founded in 1731 by English publisher Edward Cave, and printed under the pseudonym Sylvanus Urban. The magazine had widespread popularity and was even the basis for Benjamin Franklin's own magazine published in America. Along with its August printing of "The Declaration of Independency" there are additional publications regarding the American Revolution, including selected correspondence of George Washington and Parliamentary commentary about the colonies.

Condition: Light toning and foxing throughout inner pages. Corners are worn and bumped. Spine hinges are both cracked. As mentioned above, two of the folding maps have been removed from the text. Cover boards are worn with some light foxing.
