A Contemporary Account of the Boston Massacre

[Boston Massacre]. A Short Narrative of the Horrid Massacre in Boston perpetrated in the Evening of the Fifth Day of March, 1770 ... With some Observations on the State of Things prior to that Catastrophe. Printed by the Order of the Town of Boston, and Sold by Edes and Gill... and T. & J. Fleet, 1770. First edition, second issue, containing the subsequently printed "Additional Observations to A Short Narrative." Octavo. 48, 1-87 (Appendix). Disbound. Lacking the first three leaves and the first two leaves present are missing two-thirds of the text near the bottom (missing material supplied loose in photocopy facsimile). A few leaves chipped at bottom with some loss. Text browned, soiled, and worn, two pages with contemporary notes (apparently a farming record), all of Appendix is present, but the last few leaves are bound out of order, as issued. Contemporary ownership signature on page [5] of David Vinall (listed as coachmaker in Boston Directory of 1805). A poor copy of a very rare item. Sabin 80669.

    More Information:

"When a part of the copies of this Narrative had been sent to England, a restraint was laid upon the publishing of the remaining copies by a vote in Town Meeting, lest it might be thought to give an undue bias to the minds of the Jury. This delay of a few days gave the committee time to add a few more facts. Accordingly the first paragraph of page 37 was rewritten, and pages 39 to 48 added to the Narrative. The pagination of the Index was corrected, and pages 85 to 88 added at the end of the Appendix." (Henry Stevens, as quoted by Sabin). Sabin 80669.
