[Oxford, France, New York, late nineteenth- to early twentieth
century]. Bookplates toned, one with light handling crimps,
else fine. Attractively matted, glazed and framed together in one
frame to 18.75 x 14.75 inches.
Designed by Well-Known Artists
The first bookplate is one of only three designed by the British and European illustrator Aubrey Beardsley. This one being for Herbert J. Pollitt, an Oxford University student and friend to Beardsley. Commissioned by Emilie Grigsby, the second bookplate is the only known bookplate by the French artist and glass designer Rene Lalique. Third is by Frederick Remington. Subject matter is typical for Remington's studies of the American West. Fourth is by Howard Pyle, a leading magazine illustrator during the Arts and Crafts period. Designed for the Yale Club of New York City.
