[Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, John Jay]. The Federalist, on the New Constitution By Publius. Written in 1788. To which is added, Pacificus, on the proclamation of neutrality. Written in 1793. Likewise, The Federal Constitution, with all the Amendments. Revised and Corrected. New York: George F. Hopkins, 1802. Second American edition, third edition overall. Octavo. 317, [1, errata]; 351, [1, publisher's ad] pages; two pages numbered 167 and 168, respectively, as noted in errata. Later half-calf over marbled boards, gilt decorated spine with five raised bands and red and black gilt-stamped spine labels. Corners rubbed, moderate edgewear, upper board of both volumes detached but present, somewhat rubbed and worn. Marbled endpapers. Internally generally clean, top edge gilt; volume I with early ink notations to third front blank attributing each essay to its respective author for both volumes, minor intermittent foxing, occasional pencil notations, some offsetting, minor text block edgewear. Very good.

This is the first edition to identify Hamilton, Madison, and Jay as the original authors in the Preface (attribution for individual essays is not seen until the Gideon 1818 edition) and the last edition to be issued during Hamilton's lifetime.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
