Written in 1793. Likewise, the Federal Constitution, with all the Amendments. Revised and Corrected. New York: Printed and sold by George F. Hopkins, 1802. Second U. S. edition (and second in English), third overall. Two volumes, octavo in fours (8.1875 x 5 inches; 208 x 123 mm.). viii, 317, [1, errata] (two pages each numbered "167" and "168"); v, [3], 351, [1, blank] pages. Single small ornament at end of text, p. 351, second volume. Later brown goatskin; spine stamped in gilt with red calf spine label. Normal shelf wear, light soiling to bindings. Edges of text block toned; small, scattered speckles of ink; spot staining, particularly to top edges; surface scuffing, softening to corners. Foxing, thumbsoiling and staining, mostly marginal, throughout both text blocks; pp. 54-5 in first volume and pp. 224-5 in second volume toned from material previously laid in, now removed. Annotations, including author's initial penciled in at head of each essay; pp. 346-7 marked up in red, green, and blue colored pencil. Occasional dog ears, some unfolded. Errata page of first volume has offsetting from tape at top and bottom margins. Good. "Most famous and influential American political work."--Howes. "[The] eighty-five essays signed 'Publius,' collectively termed The Federalist [are] generally regarded as the greatest commentary on the Constitution and federalism ever written. John Jay wrote five of the essays; James Madison is credited with twenty-four and Hamilton with fifty-six."--American National Biography. The first edition to identify Hamilton, Madison and Jay as the original authors (generally, attribution for individual essays would follow in 1818), and the last to be issued during Hamilton's life.
