Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick (1878-1969) was an American Baptist minister, and an outspoken opponent of racial injustice. He was a central figure in the Fundamentalist-Modernist controversy within American Protestantism in the 1920s and 1930s, arguing that outdated church dogma would not serve modern congregations. In 1939, he wrote a review of the first Alcoholics Anonymous book, giving it his approval. To this day, members of Alcoholics Anonymous point to this review as a major development in the success of their movement.
