Description

[Abraham Lincoln]. Imprint of Congressman Abraham Lincoln's Speech in the House, 1848. Speech of Mr. A. Lincoln, of Illinois, on the Civil and Diplomatic Appropriation Bill; Delivered in the House of Representatives of the United States, June 20, 1848 (Washington: Printed by J. & G. S. Gideon, 1848, 14 pages). Elected to represent Illinois in the US House of Representatives in 1846, Abraham Lincoln served for two years. A steadfast Whig, Lincoln was loyal to the party line which included favoring internal improvements. In the speech recorded in this imprint given only five months after the treaty ending the Mexican War was signed, Lincoln argues for government spending on internal improvements. This copy belonged to Francis Springer, who has signed his name in pencil in the top margin of the cover. Penciled mathematical notations occur on the final page. Foxing, toning, and some lose pages. Sabin 41162; Monaghan 5.

Francis Springer (1810-1892) of Springfield, Illinois, had been a friend and neighbor of Abraham Lincoln. (Abraham and Mary Lincoln bought their first home next to Springer's home near Lincoln's office in Springfield in 1844.) At the outbreak of the Civil War, Springer enlisted as a chaplain in the Union Army. Two years later, Lincoln recommended him for a post chaplaincy in Fort Smith, Arkansas, writing, "I personally know Mr. Springer to be an excellent man" (William Furry, ed., The Preacher's Tale: The Civil War Journal of Rev. Francis Springer, [University of Arkansas Press, 2001], xvii.). President Lincoln had also referred to Mr. Springer earlier in a note to Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton as "one of my best friends" (Ibid., xvii).
