Abbie's Hoffman's First Published Work[Abbie Hoffman]. George Metesky. Fuck the System. [New York: Self-published, 1967]. First edition. Eighteenmo. 30 pages. Illustrated stapled wrappers. Covers and extremities somewhat worn. Minor rubbing and small tears to spine. Some light folding and small stains throughout. Otherwise, a very good copy of this scarce piece of ephemera.
Published under the name of "The Mad Bomber" of New York, this pamphlet is very similar in regard to subject matter to Hoffman's Steal This Book, written in 1970 and published a year later. There are numerous tips inside for obtaining free merchandise and services, as well as entries on topics like "bad trips" and "communes." As the majority of such early pieces of Yippie ephemera were probably passed out at demonstrations and the like, most were likely either well-thumbed or simply discarded in the end. Nevertheless, as it is rumored that this pamphlet was printed using the city's presses and features their "finest" of the Ninth Precinct on the cover, we can only assume Hoffman's titular advice was heeded somewhat.
