Presentation copy, inscribed by Walker, "To Fred Cody / Peace / Alice Walker / 6-27-82" on the front free endpaper. Octavo. [viii], 245, [3, blank] pages. Publisher's purple cloth backstrip over cream boards, spine and rear board lettered in silver, dust jacket. Jacket spine slightly sunned, jacket rubbed and mildly soiled, one tear and one chip on front jacket panel at bottom, cloth backstrip slightly rubbed and sunned. Slightly skewed. A very good copy. From a private collection in North Carolina.

    Alice Walker won the Pulitzer Prize for The Color Purple in 1983, being the first African-American woman to do so (the book also won the National Book Award). The recipient of this book may be the co-founder of Cody's Books, which was an independent bookstore in Berkeley, California, being famous for its extensive stock in hard-to-find works of literature as well as pioneering the author-reading series (Alice Walker was a participant).
