Alice Caldwell Hegan. Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch. New York: The Century Co., 1901. First edition. Octavo. [8], 153, [1, blank] pages. Title vignette, decorated initials. Publisher's green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front decorated in dark blue, red, and gilt, with gilt sky; top edge of text block trimmed. Slight skew to spine; spine ends gently pushed and showing a tiny amount of wear; light rubbing and soiling to boards; a few heavier spots of soiling toward foot of front board; upper corners just barely tapped. Bookseller penciling at endpapers. Text block very softly dulled with age, particularly along edges; occasional faint foxing, spot-staining, evidence of handling or dog-earing scattered throughout interior. Very good. With bookplate of Jean Hersholt affixed to front pastedown, in custom chemise with Hersholt's library label, in one-quarter brown morocco book-backed slipcase. ALS note from Hegan laid in, signed "Alice Hegan Rice" and on her letterhead, to Nolan Seary, whom she addresses as "Billy Wiggs" (Seary is credited with portraying Billy in a road company, in a previous bookseller's or owner's note).

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
