Among the First Illustrations of the Rocky Mountains Made Available to the Public

Alfred E. Mathews. Gems of Rocky Mountain Scenery, Containing Views Along and Near the Union Pacific Railroad. New-York: Published by the Author, 1869. First edition. Quarto. [1-46] pages. Twenty tinted lithographic plates. The text to accompany the plates is printed on the versos of the leaves facing the plates. Publisher's original maroon cloth over beveled boards with gilt title vignette on the front board. Boards soiled with large areas of damp; corners and spine ends abraded; hinges broken; dampstaining on the top edge of contents, occasionally affecting scenes; rear endpaper with large closed tear; occasional closed tears throughout, else a sound copy, in good condition, worthy of restoration.

"Mathew's famous lithographs were among the first true representations of the Rocky Mountains to be made available to the public" (Streeter). Mathews states in his "Introductory" notice: "The Lithographs embodied in this work are selections from a series of sketches made by the artist while sojourning in Colorado, Idaho, Montana and Utah, from the fall of 1865 to the winter of 1868... These expeditions were performed, excepting during one summer, entirely alone, and principally with ponies; but on two or three occasions on snow-shoes and in a small boat... The pictures represent actual localities; and as they have been drawn on stone from the sketches by the artist himself, have lost none of their original truthfulness."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
