    Description

Alexandr Solzhenitsyn. Arkhipelag GULag [The Gulag Archipelago]. Paris: YMCA-Press, 1973-1975. First edition, first issue (text in Russian) of the author's famous indictment of the Soviet system of forced labor. Three thick octavo volumes (7 x 5.5 inches; 177 x 139 mm.). Publisher's original photographic wrappers. Minor rubbing to bindings, ownership inkstamp on the first page of Volume I; some pages in Volume I mildly bumped at upper corner; some minor occasional thumbsoiling in text; Volume III a bit skewed, front wrapper faded. Still, a nice, near fine set. Housed in modern quarter red morocco clamshell case. Solzhenitsyn won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1970, but he is perhaps best known for this unflinching account of this brutal Soviet system of forced labor. Solzhenitsyn was arrested and deported from the Soviet Union in 1974. (New York Public Library's Books of the Century 183). From the James C. Seacrest Collection.
