    Description

Alexander Graham Bell. Sheep-Breeding Experiments on Beinn Bhreagh. [No place: circa 1909]. Carbon typescript; association copy, inscribed by the author on the front cover to biologist Dr. Charles Davenport: "To Dr. Davenport / with the compliments of / Alexander Graham Bell." Quarto (10.5 x 8 inches; 265 x 201 mm.). Nineteen leaves, rectos only. On plain white paper with red rules in both vertical margins. Contemporary brad binding with "Carter's Ideal Manuscript Cover." Front cover with typed title. Covers toned; some edgewear and mild chipping to cover sheets; text leaves toned; leaves with some occasional marginal tears or wear; some thumbsoiling to leaves. Overall, a very good item with an excellent association. Housed in later quarter green morocco clamshell case. From the James C. Seacrest Collection.

This scientific study was issued in an edition of only five typewritten copies (the "Beinn Bhreagh Recorder"). This seems to be an additional copy created to satisfy a greater demand; it is unknown how many additional copies produced. Bell's lifelong work on hearing loss--which led to his development of the telephone--engendered within him an interest in genetics later in his career. This work is a direct result of his genetic experiments on sheep. Dr. Charles Davenport was a prominent biologist and eugenicist, director of biological research at Cold Spring Harbor and one of the leaders of the American eugenics movement.
