With Forty-Eight Pages of Woodcut Star-Charts

Alessandro Piccolomini. La Sfera del Mondo. Venice: Giouanni Varisco & Paganino Paganini, [n.d., 1579]. Later edition. Small quarto. Approximately 8 x 6 inches. [xii], 252 pages. Illustrated with woodcut diagrams throughout. [Bound With:] De le Stelle Fisse. Venice: Gio. Varisco, & Compagni, [n.d., 1579]. Small quarto. 32 fol., 48 [woodcut star-charts, in pages], 25-93 (tables) fol., [3, Con Qval Grado del Zodiaco Naschino] fol. Bound in near contemporary full limp vellum, vellum ties. Rebacked in nineteenth-century brown calf, spine ruled in black and gilt, black gilt morocco shelf number label. Wear to vellum and spine, vellum soiled and creased, vellum ties almost entirely gone (two small stubs still present), front binding black loose, pastedowns chipped and worn, some light occasional foxing in text, overopened in a few places. Two early ownership signatures or inscriptions on front binding blank. Still, a very good example. Sfera del Mundo, originally published in 1540, was based on traditional Ptolemaic cosmography, but De le Stelle Fisse was the first star atlas published in the West. Riccardi I, 270.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
