Description

An Inscribed First Edition of Aldous Huxley's Second and Rarest Book

Aldous Huxley. Jonah. Oxford: Printed at the Holywell Press, Christmas 1917.

First edition of Huxley's rarest book, one of only fifty copies privately printed. Presentation copy, inscribed by Huxley to Francis James Rennell Rodd, Second Baron Rennell on the verso of the front wrapper: "Dear Francis, / Best wishes for the New Year. / Be indulgent to these secret / distractions of an Eton master / -which is what I now / am. / Aldous[underlined]." Sixteenmo. 14, [2, blank] pages. With poems in English and French.

Original printed wrappers. Wrappers and text foxed, some minor rubbing. Still, a near fine copy of a fragile item. With the bookplate of the Second Baron Rennell laid in. Now housed in half black morocco clamshell case.

This book was written just before Huxley taught French at Eton College for a year (he couldn't keep discipline in class and so left before his teaching career could flourish). Eric Blair (who wrote under the pen name George Orwell) was his student, and was impressed by Huxley's use of words (which he would put to good use during his long and distinguished literary career).
