A Hand-Colored Map of the Eastern Hemisphere by Abraham Ortelius

Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598), cartographer. Aevi Veteris, Typus Geographicus. Antwerp: 1609. Hand-colored map, taken from Ortelius' Parergon. Approximately 13.25 x 18.5 inches. Very light toning, one vertical crease down the center, most likely reinforced on verso. Text on verso just barely visible in just a few areas. A fine example. Matted, framed and glazed. This map, based on the classical work of Ptolemy, is an interesting and attractive view of the ancient world (the continents, Asia, Europe, and Africa, are generally in their more accepted configurations, but the text on the map is from Ptolemy). Although this map is of the Eastern Hemisphere, the small medallion in the lower left corner depicts North and South America.
