    A[rthur] Conan Doyle. The Return of Sherlock Holmes. London: George Newnes, Oct. 1903-Dec. 1904. Original monthly serial issue in The Strand Magazine, complete with every story that comprises The Return. Thirteen volumes. Octavo (9.625 x 6.625 inches; 245 x 165 mm.). Various paginations. Numerous full-page and in-text illustrations; opening Sherlock stories preceded by a full-page illustrations by Sidney Paget, with in-text illustrations by him. All but December issues in publisher's engraved light blue wrappers, printed in dark blue; December issues in publisher's full-color wrappers. Text blocks side-stapled. Housed in two custom clamshells, one quarter book-backed navy morocco over navy blue cloth; spines lettered in gilt with five raised bands. Generally mild edge wear and toning; some soft creases; at least five issues with one or both wrappers reattached, a further six with wrappers starting to split from one end; some added glue to repaired wrappers; two issues with rusty staples beginning to peek through front wrappers. Backstrips a bit worn with some chipped at ends. Two issues with ad slips inserted into text block, now slightly offsetting onto facing pages. Tea stains to front wrapper of August 1904 issue. Normal uneven toning with some foxing and occasional spot- and thumbsoiling scattered throughout interiors. About very good. Full checklist of issues available online.
