A[rthur] Conan Doyle. The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. London: George Newnes, Dec. 1892-Dec. 1893. Original monthly serial issue in The Strand Magazine, complete with every story that comprises The Memoirs. Twelve volumes. Octavo (9.625 x 6.625 inches; 245 x 165 mm.). Various paginations. Each issue with frontispiece, numerous in-text and full-page illustrations; Holmes stories with in-text illustrations by Sidney Paget. Publisher's original engraved light blue wrappers, printed in dark blue. Text blocks side-stapled. Housed in custom clamshell, one quarter book-backed bright blue morocco over bright blue cloth; spine lettered in gilt with five raised bands. Overall mild edge wear, some chipping mostly at ends of backstrips; varied amounts of toning and soiling to wrappers; some soft creasing and scattered soiling. Staples exposed in some parts, most a bit rusty with some offsetting onto versos of wrappers; staple poking through rear wrapper of February 1893 issue. One wrapper starting to split at one end on five issues; December 1893 issue completely lacking rear wrapper. Penciling and purple newsagent's stamps to some front wrappers. Normal uneven toning with some foxing and occasional thumbsoiling scattered throughout interiors. Very good. Final issue in this set opens with "The Adventure of the Final Problem," featuring Paget's full-page "The Death of Sherlock Holmes" illustration. Full checklist of issues available online.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
