    Description

The first Soviet space journalist's report on Vostok 2.

    A. P. Romanov Book Signed by Gagarin and Titov: As It Was... From the Diary of the Special Correspondent of TASS Originally from the Author's Personal Collection. (Moscow: Government Publishing House of Political Literature, 1961). (КАК ЭТО БЫЛО... ИЗ ДНЕВНИКА СПЕЦИАЛЬНЫЙ КОРРЕСПОНДЕНТ ТАСС). The author's personal copy with his library stamp on the title page. Signed by the first two cosmonauts, Yuri Gagarin and Gherman Titov, also on the title page. In Russian, soft covers, illustration of Vostok 2 in orbit on front, staple bound, fifty-three pages, five illustrations, first edition. This is the first separately-published journalistic account of a Soviet space mission. Yuri Gagarin's flight was launched under a veil of secrecy and no news was issued until his successful return to Earth. For the second mission, Vostok 2 with Cosmonaut Gherman Titov, the Soviet Council of Ministers granted early access and press credentials to Aleksandr Petrovich Romanov. His detailed reporting of the August 6-7, 1961, seventeen-orbit flight was published in the Soviet Union and the world on August 7th. An expanded version was serialized in a journal and then published in this present book form in early October. This is the author's personal copy. Originally sold as Lot 23 in Sotheby's first Russian Space History auction on December 11, 1993. Extremely rare, especially with this provenance and the historic signatures. About very good condition with light general wear.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
