Castellan's Beautiful Work on the Ottoman Empire, with Seventy-Six Hand-Colored Plates

A[ntoine] L[ouis] Castellan. Moeurs, usages, costumes des Othomans, et abrégé de leur histoire. Avec des éclaircissemens tirés d'ouvrages orientaux, et communiqués par M. Langlès. Six vol. in-18 ornés de soixante et douze planches. Paris: Nepveu, 1812. First edition. Six eighteenmo volumes . Approximately 5.25 x 3.25 inches. 20, xxxi, [1, blank], 119, [1, contents]; [4], 225, [1, blank], [1, contents], [1, blank]; [4], 251, [1, contents]; [4], 282, [1, contents], [1, blank]; [4], 231, [1, contents]; [4], 235, [1, blank] pages. Seventy-six hand-colored stipple-engraved plates printed in brown, including frontispieces (only seventy-two plates called-for). Beautifully bound in near contemporary full black straight-grain morocco, boards decoratively ruled in gilt with gilt cornerpieces, spines tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endleaves. Very minor rubbing to bindings, some occasional light foxing. A superb set in a beautiful binding. The plates, colored aquatints, are mostly reduced versions of Dalvimart's plates from The Costume of Turkey. These depict the costume of the functionaries of the Ottoman court; there are also illustrations of arms, standards and other objects as well as an interesting section on music and dance" (Blackmer). "If you want any more books, there is 'Castellan's Moeurs des Ottomans,' the best compendium of the kind I ever met with, in six small tomes" (Lord Byron to Thomas Moore, August 28, 1813). Ataby 204; Colas 545; Lipperheide 1427 (all describing copies with only seventy-two plates, as called for on the title-page; our copy has seventy-six plates). Blackmer 300 (calling for seventy-three plates). From the collection of a gentleman of New York.
