    Description

    A. A. Milne. When We Were Very Young. London: Methuen & Co., [1924]. First edition, number 53 of 100 of the large paper copies signed by A. A. Milne and E. H. Shepard. Also signed by Billy Moon on the frontispiece, additionally inscribed by A. A. Milne, and with an autograph letter signed by Billy Moon and a photo to Leonard Amster. Large quarto. 100 pages. Publisher's red cloth backed gray boards, printed paper label to front board; corners just bumped, minor wear to foot of spine. Cream colored endpapers, all edges untrimmed; bubbling to front and rear pastedowns with some discoloration, some offsetting to endpapers with bookseller's unobtrusive pencil annotations. Some minor thumb soiling to first few leaves, a few instances of spotting, but generally internally bright and clean. With original printed dust jacket; joints worn with chips and minor losses, somewhat toned and soiled, spine panel sunned and moderately toned, closed tear to front panel (approximately 1.5 inches; 40 mm) through "W" in "Were." Housed in a half blue morocco over boards slipcase, gilt stamped spine; moderately rubbed and chipped with scratches to spine. Additionally inscribed by A. A. Milne to the front free endpaper, "This book belongs to / Leonard Amster / who says I wrote it / - so I suppose I did. / A. A. Milne / Cotchford Farm / Hartfield / August 24th 1926." Very good.

Also included in this lot is a short autograph letter signed from Billy Moon to Leonard Amster, writing, "I would love to come to Nue-York [sic] to see you." His father, A. A. Milne, has written on the back of the lined sheet with the Cotchford Farm letterhead, in part, "This is Moon's longest letter, so you ought to be proud."

A small albeit charming collection of items from 'Billy Moon' (Christopher Robin) and A. A. Milne. We are pleased to report that by 1926, young Billy Moon has correctly flipped the orientation of his "n" and we are very proud of him. Lot also includes a very sweet photograph of the boy and his bear, peeking out from a hideout in a tree, and inscribed on the verso in Billy Moon's hand, "Christopher Robin. and Pooh." From the Pat McInally Collection of Winnie-the-Pooh and Christopher Robin
