    1876 Full Year Bound Volume of Harper's Weekly. Published weekly between January 1 and December 30, 1876 by Harper & Brothers. Elephant folio (11.5" x 16.25"), 1,068 pages. Centerfolds bound-in. For the collector hungry for Harper's Weekly, this 1876 collection is a veritable feast, with every weekly issue and supplement bound together in sturdy hardcover. 1876 was a busy year for both the United States and the popular magazine, with events such as the American Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, the presidential election of Rutherford B. Hayes, and the capture of William "Boss" Tweed in Spain. This latter event is especially apropos to readers of Harper's Weekly. Boss Tweed's Tammany Hall organization in New York City was perhaps the most corrupt political organization in American history, and his downfall can be directly attributed to Thomas Nast's illustrations of him in Harper's Weekly. Tweed despised Nast's Harper's Weekly illustrations, and was once reportedly heard to exclaim, "Stop them damned pictures. I don't care so much what the papers say about me. My constituents can't read, but, damn it, they can see pictures!" When Tweed escaped the United States, then bribed his way out of Cuba and headed for Spain, he thought he would be safe there. Apparently, though, Tweed's constituents weren't the only ones who "can see pictures." Legend has it that the Spanish authorities, tipped off by the U. S. government, used Nast's Harper's Weekly illustrations to help recognize Tweed upon his arrival. They arrested him and shortly sent him back to America, where he died in jail two years later.
