1873-1876 Texas Ledger Book containing 122 pages of lists of Texas real estate and chattel "Rendered for tales" by year, most belonging to the Houston & Texas Central Railway. 8.5" x 14". Two-thirds of the ledger is blank. Each of the 122 pages contains ten columns listing such information as "Grantee," "County," and "Values." (Original grantees, such as Stephen F. Austin, are listed in the "Grantee" columns.) Each of the four years recorded contains many of the same lists, such as "List of State Lands Rendered for tales of 1873"; "List of Lands belonging to the H & T.C.R.W. Co. Rendered for Tales 1843"; and "List of Lands belonging to A[braham]. Groesbeeck Et al. Rendered for Tal. 1843." One list, "List of Miscellanious [sic] Property belonging to the H. & T.C.R.W. Co. Rendered for Corporation Tales of 1874," itemizes such chattel as locomotives, first-class passenger cars, and engines.

In 1856, the Galveston & Red River Railway was renamed the Houston & Texas Central Railway. One year before the first entries were made in this ledger, the railroad reached Dallas. The company was absorbed into the Texas & New Orleans in 1934, ending the use of its name. The covers of this ledger are heavily worn, with some leather peeling away to reveal pasteboard. The front cover has separated. Lacking lower portion of backstrip. Minor soiling and scratches.
